MOVIE NIGHTS
Every weekend we're watching movies together...whether you're in Pennsylvania USA, or Sydney Australia. It's a throwback! Back to the days when you had the anticipation for waiting till the weekend to see the classic horror or science fiction film that was listed in the TV Guide. The plan is to watch a movie at 7:30PM on Saturday night in your own time zone. Or, if you can't Saturday night...anytime during the weekend. Then, we'll all get together and e-mail our thoughts on the film...a few paragraphs...or simply a sentence if you'd like. They after-viewing reviews appear on our Creepy Classics/Monster Bash News Page. See the latest thoughts posted by viewers ther now.

I had a chance to view this on the Creepy Classics Movie Night with a lot of friends including Bob Pellegrino, Dan Weber, Shawn Israel and Tom and Eileen Jackson. This has always been my favorite version...it just seems warm, friendly and does a great job driving home the "Scrooge Factor" with Reginald Owen. Plus, it's a real family affair with Gene Lockhart and family. In fact, the young daughter is June Lockhart (SHE-WOLF OF LONDON and LOST IN SPACE).
I love many versions of this clasic Christmas tale....but, this one is my fave. Lots of familiar charater actor faces....Tiny Tim is the young boy who also appears in the Rathbone Sherlock Holmes series.

I have a fun stories about the 1938 Christmas Carol.
There is a local movie theater near us, the Henrico Theater, which is a beautiful Art Deco era building. They are now owned by the county and used as a cultural arts event place. Last year they showed the 1938 Christmas Carol on the big screen. It was the first time I has seen this version, more so a surprise as I was expecting the 1951 version.
Last year I met Ann Rutherford, best known as Careen O’Hara, Scarlett’s younger sister in “Gone with the Wind” as well as Andy Hardy’s steady girl Polly Benedict. Miss Rutherford has a strong memory of her film work and a great wit about her career. I asked about her playing the Ghost of Christmas Past. She replied, “Remember it, HOW COULD I FORGET IT? It was a bit scary being suspended in that flying harness!” Miss Rutherford was very charming and told stories on Mickey Rooney, David O Selznick, Gene Autry and Wallace Beery among others. She also smiled when I told her my wife Diane think Joseph should have played Ashley Wilkes. “Joe Cotton! He would have been great! I wonder why we didn’t get him?” I think she was the prettiest Christmas Ghost of all.

This was my first time to see this particular version of A Christmas Carol. I grew up watching a creepy 1/2 hour animated version that was part of the Christmas pantheon of specials in the 70s along with Rudolph and the Little Drummer Boy. The haunting tune of God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen combined with unusual muted tone animation has stuck in my brain all these years. This version was pleasant, creepy at times. The ghost of Christmas past was cute, and it moved at a brisk pace. One thing I did not like was that there didn´t seem to be too much conflict in Scrooge when he changed. His heart changed to quickly in this version, so it wasn´t interesting the transformation.
Now we are on to that Mexican Frozen Cheesefest Santa Claus. Merry Christmas all!!!

But nothing can compare to meeting the Great Great Grandson of Charles Dickens, Gerald Charles Dickens!!!
We saw his one man performance of A Christmas Carol. He did the voices of 26 different characters in Williamsburg, VA
Next year, 2012, will mark the 200th Birthday of Charles Dickens
